By taking a figure and adding another a dialogue is created. A conversation between the two instead of simply between the subject and their viewer. Although as twins, mirror images of one another do they fuse to become one, creating a greater force and therefore again the dialogue is back between the one whole and their viewer.
Or are these two separate aspects of the one person, as with the layering representing two of the multi facets of the human psyche.
These are all ideas that I play with and work in the understory of my creative process
This pair are also joined with the intertwined heart the symbol of love, presented here in the black and white stripes of opposing forces. ideas and beliefs yet which are complimentary and inter twine to form a dynamic whole.
The multi layering of this piece has many elements. The background provides a snapshot from my local landscape … the salty saline ‘lake’ that I view from my home with the silhouettes of the flamingoes as they graze for food. The fattest daisies which blanket the banks in the early spring all rendered in soft glittering yellow, the colour of the sun shimmering on the waters surface.
The gorgeous richness of the gold leaf simply symbolising the wealth of our easy going western lives and in this piece, decorated with the outline of a favourite fig. Fig trees grow with abandon in my Mediterranean home and perfume the air, reminding me of a childhood abroad and homes away from home. Also my daughter’s favourite smell! I can’t help but think of her each time I am assailed by the scent or view the familiar silhouette of the distinctive leaves outlined against the azure blue of the sky.
Finally the perfect pinks of the Oleander petals that grow in abundance throughout this sunny area, sprawl up the walls and across my canvas in every hue of pink and red one could imagine or desire!
