Two girls joined by a vast single bloom.
Twins with a single pulsing heart gazing out from the canvas with ‘knowing innocence’.
They have the same intricate curls and glossy, plump red lips, only different-colored eyes of
piercing blue and teal suggesting that they are, in fact, independent beings.
At first glance this work is more minimal than other pieces, yet on closer inspection you can
see layer upon layer of intricate patterning and designs.
When creating this piece, after placing these gorgeous girls, I worked on the background
completely covering it with copper leaf, carefully occupying all of the negative spaces to
allow the image to pop from the canvas as though the decapitated forms are simply floating
in space. This luscious leaf was then covered in my signature stripes of black and white,
rendered in contrasting textures, mats and glosses in an intricate design of Japanese
inspired blossom. The petals' independent forms appear as butterflies or other creatures that
inhabit the blooming buds.
The paint has then been softly sanded back to allow the under layers to protrude
giving the viewer glimpses of the inner depths and the shimmering lushness of the
copper leaf. Enticing peeks at what has come before producing a piece that
appears shiny and contemporary yet has an underlying history stored within.
Look closely at the lush petals of the peony where small images and stickers have been
encapsulated inside the sealed bubble of the varnish - all symbols of my world,
flamingoes, sunshine and sparkles.
